When living in Manhattan, one must adapt a life of limited compassion since encounters with the homeless are unavoidable. While it is appropriate to feel empathy towards the homeless for various reasons, it is illogical to feel guilt towards their cries of hunger and morally wrong to feed these cries with a monetary handout. We should, instead, provide educational handouts teaching self-sufficiency. Manhattan is the Mecca of free food. Between first of the month Wednesday gallery openings, grocery store samples, store opening parties, soup kitchens, leftovers in parks, etc., there is never a reason to go hungry. Instead of encouraging compassion and empathy in American society, what if independence and opportunism was advocated? As members of the community, I argue that we have the responsibility to promote opportunity and to not discriminate against those in the process of aggrandizement. Imagine how invincible the American workforce would be if participants stopped looking for handouts and shamelessly channeled energy into actively creating and seeking opportunity. This proactive philosophy can be applied to any facet of life and is extrapolated from the American Dream. After all, excuses are for the hungry, unemployed, and weak.
